Banana Muffins with Nutella Ganache


I looked in my cabinet today and was a bit shocked to find a neglected jar of Nutella hiding in the back. After all, how does one ignore Nutella? Nut-freaking-tella! T introduced me to this luscious hazelnut spread a handful of years ago when we used to live together. Many a college meal was comprised of Nutella sandwiches thereafter.

Rich, creamy Nutella, I would like to start an affair with you. The lustful, wild abandon type. I promise to never forget you in the cupboard again. You are not deserving of such neglect!

Nutella and bananas is probably one of my favorite flavor combinations of all time. Chocolate and bananas comes in a close second. That said, can you imagine the brilliance of a Nutella-chocolate topping on top of a banana muffin? I already had a go-to banana muffin recipe at the ready, so why not? All the things that I love in one neat little cupcake wrapper. Yum.


Banana Muffins | Bon Apetit, March 1999


  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup mashed ripe bananas (about 2 large)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips


Preheat oven to 350°F. Line twelve 1/3-cup muffin cups with foil muffin liners. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in large bowl. Mix mashed bananas, egg, melted butter and milk in medium bowl. Stir banana mixture into dry ingredients just until blended (do not overmix). Stir in chocolate chips.

Divide batter among prepared muffin cups, filling each about 3/4 full. Bake muffins until tops are pale golden and tester inserted into center comes out with some melted chocolate attached but no crumbs, about 32 minutes. Transfer muffins to rack; cool.

Nutella-Chocolate Ganache | Personal creation


  • 1/2 c. Nutella
  • 1/4 c. Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tbl. Unsalted butter


Melt the ingredients over a double boiler or in the microwave. Stir to combine. Spread topping over cupcakes.

Will frost 12-24 cupcakes depending on how much topping you like.
